Three-level Frequency Converter SD2M: New Models for Turbomachinery

Press releases

SIEB & MEYER expands the performance spectrum

SIEB & MEYER has significantly extended the performance spectrum for applications in turbo blowers and turbo compressors of the three-level frequency converter series SD2M. Especially in the field of high-speed turbomachinery SIEB & MEYER has won numerous new customers for series production of the frequency converter SD2M over the past years.

"A total of seven different versions of SD2M are now available, ranging from 75 HP to 400 HP or 165 A to 630 A rated current," explained Torsten Blankenburg, CTO at SIEB & MEYER AG. "The devices are very compact which is an important requirement in this field of application." The SD2M models with three-level main supply are particularly suitable for applications with continuous load. Beside water-cooled variants air-cooled devices are also available on request. NRTL/CSA certification is applied for all devices which is relevant for customers who export their machines to North America.

The new SD2M versions offer another special highlight for use in turbo blowers and turbo compressors: Optionally, active magnetic bearings can be supplied with the required DC voltage via clamp connections which ensures to maintain this voltage for braking even in the event of malfunctions.

The innovative three-level technology of the frequency converter SD2M and switching frequencies of up to 16 kHz ensure an excellent current quality, which reduces motor losses and increases overall efficiency. This prevents excessive rotor heating and reduces the load on the bearings as well as insulation stress. Thanks to the frequency converter, customers can do without expensive LC filters or use smaller, cost-saving motor chokes instead.
