Frequency converter SD4S for grinding aplications

Frequency converter SD4S by SIEB & MEYER enables high-dynamic grinding processes

In the world of machine tools, grinding applications pose a special challenge. Precision, speed and flexibility are decisive factors in this field. The frequency converter SD4S by SIEB & MEYER comes with all the features needed to optimally support these high-dynamic processes.

Among the machine tools, grinding machines are the top performers. Internal grinding applications, for example, require sensorless operation of asynchronous and synchronous spindles up to 240,000 rpm. The motor heating, however, must be kept at a minimum to protect the sensitive materials and to ensure consistently high machining quality. In addition, the flexibility of the machine plays a decisive role so that switching between different grinding spindles can be carried out quickly and smoothly. The opportunity to save various motor parameter sets is therefore essential. Furthermore, customers often demand special functions like a high-dynamic active load detection.

Highest rotating field frequencies with minimum rotor heating

For all these requirements, the frequency converter SD4S by SIEB & MEYER (Germany) presents the optimal solution. The compact stand-alone variant of the product generation SD4x by the Lueneburg-based high-speed specialist enables sensorless operation of asynchronous, synchronous and IPM motors. With SD4S, asynchronous motors reach rotating field frequencies up to 6,000 Hz (360,000 rpm) and synchronous motors up to 4,000 Hz (240,000 rpm), both with minimal rotor losses and correspondingly low motor heating

SIEB & MEYER achieves this minimal heat development by using frequency converters with suitable control technology and a well thought-out topology. The low temperatures extend the service life of the ball bearings typically used in machining spindles and also improve the manufacturing quality

Furthermore, SD4S comes with programmable digital measuring system interfaces such as BiSS-C, EnDat 2.2, TTL und Hall. The integrated real-time clock allows a precise analysis of error cases as well as interactions with external events and processes

Parameterization is done via a standard Ethernet interface, replacing the USB interface, which is susceptible to faults in industrial environments. With the Windows software drivemaster4, the user carries out the parameterization, setup and simulations of the SD4x generation.
