Drive Controller SD4S by SIEB & MEYER

Press releases

One product series for various high-speed applications

Wherever high-speed motors must operate particularly efficient and with very low losses, the SD4S by SIEB & MEYER can fully use its strengths. The drive controller series covers a power range up to 48 kW providing the suitable solution for a wide range of applications.

Wide power range in three voltage classes

SD4S by SIEB & MEYER is designed as a true all-rounder and comes in three voltage categories. The smallest device variant has a power output of 300 W@50 VAC or 800 W@230 VAC and measures only 40 mm in width. In addition to the single-phase variants with up to 2400 W at an input voltage of 230 VAC, the series also includes three-phase variants with up to 48 kW at an input voltage of 400 V. The latter can also operate with a three-phase input voltage of 230 VAC and then offer a proportionally reduced power. All this makes the SD4S product series suitable for various applications.

More power with less volume

Compared to the predecessor series SD2S, SIEB & MEYER was able to reduce the construction volume by up to 44 % while maintaining the same output power. The high efficiency and wide power range predestine the SD4S series for the use in machine tools, dental milling machines and precision machining equipment – for example in the watchmaking industry. Other areas of application include wafer dicing machines in semiconductor manufacturing, turbo compressors and high-dynamic servo applications.

Control technology at a new level – including galvanic isolation

On the control side, the SD4S supports sensorless asynchronous motors up to a rotating field frequency of 6,000 Hz (360,000 rpm) as well as synchronous and IPM motors up to 4,000 Hz (240,000 rpm). Such a wide range is currently unique on the market and offers additional degrees of freedom in the drive design. For motors with low insulation strength – especially in the lower power range – the SD4S offers a galvanic isolation of the thermal contact.

Network-capable, safe and easy to configure

All devices come with the safety function Safe Torque Off (STO) as standard. The communication with the control system is established via CANopen and Modbus TCP; an optional multiprotocol real-time Ethernet interface is available for the communication via EtherCAT (CoE), PROFINET IO or POWERLINK. With the integrated real-time clock, users can accurately analyze error cases and process events.

For the parameterization, SD4S is equipped with a robust Ethernet interface – a clear advantage over a USB interface that is prone to interference in industrial environments. The Windows software drivemaster4 by SIEB & MEYER serves as the central tool for configuration, setup and simulations of the complete SD4x series. In addition, the SpindleServiceTool (SST) is available, a separate software especially for spindle manufacturers to carry out individual running-in sequences of spindles without external control.

Moreover, the tool Motor Analyzer, already known from drivemaster2, was further developed. This tool enables precise simulations of the entire control behavior including operating points, characteristic curves and output currents. The new FFT analysis provides useful figures of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THDi/THDv) – a valuable tool for evaluating motor heating and system efficiency.
